Cernos gel 1% works by replacing testosterone that is normally produced in the body. This medicine is used to treat conditions caused by low levels of testosterone hormone in the body. These conditions include delayed puberty, impotence, and other hormonal imbalances. Cernos Gel 1% should be used only if low level of testosterone has been confirmed by corresponding blood tests and symptoms.
Take the medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor. Reaction of a particular organism to it can be individual and depends on body weight, medical conditions and other medications you take. The recommended starting dose of Cernos Gel 1% is 50 mg of testosterone applied topically once daily in the morning to the shoulders and upper arms and/or abdomen area (preferably at the same time every day).The entire contents should be squeezed into the palm of the hand and immediately applied to the application sites. Alternately, patients may squeeze a portion of the gel from the packet into the palm of the hand and apply to application sites.
After applying the gel, the application site should be allowed to dry prior to dressing. Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water after application. The patient should be advised to avoid swimming or showering for at least 5 hours after the application of Cernos Gel 1%. Children and women should avoid contact with unwashed or unclothed application site(s) of men using Cernos Gel 1%. Prior to situation in which direct skin-to-skin contact is anticipated, patients should wash the application site thoroughly with soap and water to remove any testosterone residue. Do not apply this medicine to your penis or your scrotum.
Cernos Gel 1% is contraindicated in men with carcinoma of the breast or known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate. Cernos Gel 1% is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding as it may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Patients with BPH treated with androgens are at an increased risk for worsening of signs and symptoms of BPH. Monitor patients with BPH for worsening signs and symptoms.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects are increased prostate specific antigen, mood swings, hypertension, increased red blood cell count and skin irritation. Cernos Gel can cause such serious side effects as increased urination at night, trouble starting your urine stream, enlarged or painful breasts, having to pass urine many times during the day, having an urge that you have to go to the bathroom right away, having a urine accident, being unable to pass urine or weak urine flow, blood clots in the legs or lungs, swelling of your ankles, feet, or body, with or without heart failure and Have problems breathing while you sleep. If you have any of the serious side effects listed above contact your healthcare provider at once.
Cernos Gel 1% may interact with Insulin, a blood thinner e.g. warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven or a steroid medicine e.g. methylprednisolone (Medrol), prednisone (Sterapred), and others.
If you miss a dose of Isoniazid, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
Store Cernos Gel 1% between 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Cernos Gel 1% out of the reach of children and away from pets. Keep away from fire.
